Review of SPIRIT INCORPORATED:How to Follow Your Spiritual Path From 9 to 5

by Kathy Juline for Science of Mind Magazine

LOVE MADE VISIBLE

Kahlil Gibran gives a beautiful definition of work in THE PROPHET when he says that “work is love made visible.” This statement bears pondering deeply. Gibran is telling us, poetically, that Spirit expresses through whatever we do, whether it’s holding a job, caring for a family, or running a business–and that love is our ultimate “product.” Taking a practical approach to this truth, Kathleen Hawkins explores a variety of ways we can apply spiritual principals to our work. Drawing on her many years of experience as an entrepreneur and business owner, she offers over 200 techniques and ideas for transforming this area of our life.

Letting God be our employer opens the floodgates of spiritual power: this is Hawkins’ basic message. When we act for the greatest good of all concerned, our profits and job performance are favorably affected–and what’s more, our entire life is enriched.

In keeping with her practical focus, she shares with us a number of her own significant learning experiences–the bankruptcy of a seminar promoter upon whom she’d depended for business, the loss of an investment due to the questionable ethics of a financial advisor, and years she spent in a dead-end job because she believed at the time in lack and limitation. Her point is not to highlight negative events but to show that God is on the job with us, around the clock, and that when we incorporate spirituality into our workplace, potential disasters become blessings. A wealth of “how-to’s” include 9 ways to rise above Murphy’s Law, 12 ways to keep a healthy perspective, 18 ways to stay on top of things, 8 steps to a successful negotiation, and 11 steps to achievement. Always the emphasis is on putting God first in every work-related issue.

Reading between the lines, this is really a manual on spiritual living, period. Faith, personal integrity, creative thinking, and alignment with our Higher Power are applicable every day to whatever we are doing. But definitely from 9 to 5, this book helps us to deal with difficult business colleagues, stress from an overly demanding schedule, or the challenge of adhering to high ethical values in the world of work.
